Rare 1940s NELL McCREDIE Gum Leaf-Shaped Pottery Dish | Three Raised Gumnuts | Simplicity Combined with Craftsmanship | Highly Collectible

This simple yet eye-catching green gum-leaf-shaped pottery dish with its three-dimensional gum nut embellishment, is signed ,McCredie N.S.W, — an Epping, NSW, commercial pottery that was active from the early 1930s to the 1950s.

The stalks of the gum nuts are looped to form a handle, while the ribs of the leaf are raised, providing an additional tactile element as well as also adding to the sense of realism.

The dish is 28 cm (~11") long, 3.5 cm (~1.4") high, and 13.5 cm at its widest point. It is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or even signs of crazing.

ABOUT McCREDIE POTTERY
The pottery was commenced by Nellie (Nell) McCredie who obtained a degree in architecture from the University of Sydney (1919 to 1923). After spending six years as a consulting architect in Queensland, she studied pottery under the master craftsman Lewis Jervis Harvey — an important practitioner and teacher in the Arts and Crafts movement — which is reflected in this piece.

She returned to Sydney at the beginning of the Great Depression and initially taught pottery at the YWCA, before opening her own commercial pottery business in conjunction with her younger brother Robert.

Nell is recognized as having made simple, yet spectacular pieces that earned her the Art and Craft Society’s ,Elizabeth Soderberg Memorial Award for Pottery, in 1947 and 1951.

Increasingly hard to find, McCredie pottery is very collectible.
