Rare Vintage PENNINO Ruby Red Rhinestone Snake Chain Choker Necklace in a Heavy and Shiny Rhodium Plated Setting | Highly Collectible
This beautifully elegant silver-tone choker necklace with ruby-red navette-cut rhinestones was made by Pennino in either the 1940s or 1950s.
The body of the necklace is constructed from base metal with a heavy and solid rhodium plating that is ultra-reflective and shiny. Likewise, the prong-set navettes are clear and sparkling — a testament to the quality of the rhinestones (they are probably Austrian), and the skilled workmanship of the jeweler.
ABOUT PENNINO
The Pennino signature was first used in a small New York goldsmith shop in 1908 by Pasquale Pennino, a second-generation master jeweler, who had emigrated from Naples, Italy, to the United States.
Pasquale's three sons formally founded Pennino Brothers in 1926, and they created high-end 'real look' jewelry that was sold through upscale department stores and jewelers.
According to the Costume Jewelry Collectors website, "The Pennino’s excelled during the cocktail style jewelry movement of the late 1930s into the 1940s. The glitz and glamour of that time were perfect for the “real” look that much of their jewelry exhibited."
As with other well-known costume jewelry designers of that time, their jewelry was used in Hollywood productions and worn by many leading ladies.
