ORIGINAL1966 OIVA TOIKKA Designed Bowl Produced by Nuutajärvi Glassworks, Finland.
This beautiful mid-century clear glass bowl is from the original "Flora" series designed by Oiva Toikka in 1966 and produced by the Nuutajärvi Glassworks in Finland.
The Flora series comprised a range of glassware molded from high-quality Finnish glass with detailed irregular relief patterns of flowers and leaves.
The Flora range was produced from 1966 to 1968 by Nuutajärvi in Finland. The firm merged with iittala in 1988, and subsequently, factories in Germany, Thailand, and Italy have attempted to manufacture certain items of the Flora pattern (which are often marketed as ,Flora-style,). However, none of these manufacturers have been able to completely replicate the sparkling clarity and the crispness of the pattern that are characteristics of Nuutajärvi glass.
The difference between this bowl — the original — and the ,reissued, pieces is very slight, yet significant. For example, if you run your hand across the base of the original bowl, the relief pattern is very evident; on the reissue, it is much more subdued. In addition, the original is also heavier, weighing about 50 g more than the later versions.
The bowl stands 10 cm (~4") tall is 19.5 cm (~7.6") in diameter and is in excellent vintage condition.
PREFER A ,FLORA-STYLE, BOWL? Whichever way you look at it, the Flora pattern is joyous and delightful. And this size bowl is very versatile — ideal for everything from salads to trifles.
