Vintage ROYAL COPENHAGEN Nils Thorssen Faience Baca Bedside Table Lamp Base | Iconic Mid-Century Danish Design | A One-Off Rare Find!
This stunning mid-century bedside-table lamp base has been created from a 1960s Royal Copenhagen vase designed by Nils Thorsson as part of the Baca line. The complex relief decoration in brown, ochre, and white is reminiscent of an ancient mosaic depicting abstract birds and flowers.
The conversion from vase to lamp base has been brilliantly and seamlessly executed. The opening of the vase has been sealed with a 0.4 cm round piece of polished copper (or similar metal) that continues the tonal look of the base. The light bulb fitting and its switch suggest that the conversion was made in the 1960s/70s, which is also confirmed by the style of the electrical cord. The bayonet plug indicates the vase was converted to a lamp in a Commonwealth country (probably the UK or Australia).
While there are larger Baca table lamps manufactured by Royal Copenhagen for Fog & Mørup (pioneers of Danish modern lighting), we have found no other examples of this particular table lamp. The ceramic base is in excellent vintage condition, with no cracks, chips, crazing, or other blemishes, and the lamp is fully functional.
