This original 39 cm x 30 cm acrylic on canvas is by Marie Napurulla, a Luritja woman from Urampinyi (Tempe Downs) in Central Australia. It belongs to her Grandmother's Journey series, which tells the story of a journey regularly taken by her ancestors from Urrampinyi | Tempe Downs to Utju | Areyonga, and then to Ntaria | Hermannsburg.
Marie's grandmother and mother were both part of the Stolen Generations, and the work comes from her calling to return to country and learn her First Nations heritage. Her paintings map that country and the path of the journey: three circles marking the places along the route, two rivers crossed — the Finke and the Palmer — and the sacred waterholes found on the way.
The composition is built from fluid, interlocking fields of red, yellow and black, bound by white dotting and line work, with three concentric circle motifs anchoring the canvas.
Painted in acrylic on stretched canvas and professionally framed by The Lemon Tree Framing Gallery, East Gosford. One of a kind, signed on the reverse with the artist's name, language group. and story title.
