This is a truly exquisite find! This glass creamer and sugar bowl set was designed by Tapio Wirkkala for iittala, Finland, in 1968 as part of the Ultima Thule collection, which for some time was used in Finnair,s first-class cabin service.
The creamer is 8 cm (~3.15") high while the sugar bowl stands 5.2 cm (~2"). Each piece rests on three round feet as part of a design inspired by the effect of melting ice. The term "Ultima Thule" was used in medieval times to refer to places beyond the known world, or sometimes, to Scandinavia. Evocative of an icy landscape of the furthest reaches, Ultima Thule is the most popular line of glassware ever produced by iittala.
Tapio Wirrkala (1915-1985) is considered one of the icons of Finnish design and a symbol of the international success of postwar Finnish design.
The set is in exceptional vintage condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or signs of surface wear.
