Mid-Century DENBY Two-Pint Round Lidded Casserole with Loop Handle | Greenwheat Pattern | Albert Colledge Design | Very Good Condition
This beautiful loop-handled, two-pint lidded stoneware casserole dish from Denby features the soughT-after 1950s Greenwheat design. First launched in 1956, Greenwheat remains one of Denby's most successful lines and was in production for about 20 years.
The dish measures 13 cm (~5.1") to the top of the lid and 28 cm (~11") to the outer edge of the handles. In addition to the Denby Pottery stamp on the reverse, it is signed A. Colledge the creator of the Greenwheat pattern. (For more about Albert Colledge, see below.)
This delightful mid-century piece is in very good vintage condition. Although there is a small indentation on the top of the lid knob (which is reflected in the price), it has no other chips, cracks, discoloration, or crazing — just the occasional internal scuff marks from utensils.
This is an extremely versatile piece that will add a special touch to your holiday table and family celebrations.
Denby Greenwheat items in such good condition are becoming difficult to obtain.
ABOUT DESIGNER ALBERT COLLEDGE
After joining Denby Pottery as a caster in the early years of the 20th century, Albert Colledge's talents were quickly recognized. Following his return in 1918 from the First World War, he became head of Denby’s newly established decorating department and later rose to be the company’s chief in-house designer, a role that he ceded to his son Glyn in 1950. However, Colledge remained an important Denby designer, collaborating with his son on many of Denby’s most successful lines until his retirement. He is best known for his Greenwheat stoneware tableware introduced in 1956 and produced until 1977.
