Dated and signed 1963, this Nuutajärvi Notsjö glass decanter carries the quiet confidence of a glassworks that had already been at it for 170 years when this piece left the factory floor.

Founded in 1793 in the peaceful Urjala district of Finland, Nuutajärvi Notsjö is the oldest glassworks in Finland and among the most storied in all of Scandinavia. By the mid-1960s, its artisans had mastered the art of pressed glass — and it shows here in the crisp architectural embossing that wraps the shoulder, depicting a detailed streetscape in relief. The heavy, clear glass has a satisfying solidity in the hand; the slightly flattened rectangular form sits with quiet presence on a shelf, bar cart, or sideboard.
