Vintage NELL McCREDIE NSW Ikebana Trough Vase | Arts and Crafts Inspired | Simplicity Combined with Craftsmanship | Highly Collectible

Probably dating to the late 1950s, when ikebana was gaining popularity, this simple, yet beautifully crafted vase,  is signed 'McCredie N.S.W' — an Epping, NSW, commercial pottery that was active from the early 1930s to the 1950s.

The centre of the vase includes a rectangular well for holding a kenzan — the Japanese equivalent of a flower frog, consisting of a heavy metal base with nail-like vertical pins on which flowers and natural materials are arranged.

Both inside and out, the vase is completed in a rich and glossy brown reverse drip glaze, which provides an earthy backdrop to enhance the ikebana arrangement. This is a classic example of form being designed to enhance function.

This vase is 29 cm (~11.5") long, 6.5 cm (~2.6") high, and 9.5 cm (3.75") at its widest point. It is in excellent vintage condition with no chips, cracks, repairs, or even signs of crazing.

ABOUT McCREDIE POTTERY
The pottery was commenced by Nellie (Nell) McCredie who obtained a degree in architecture from the University of Sydney (1919 to 1923). After spending six years as a consulting architect in Queensland, she studied pottery under the master craftsman Lewis Jervis Harvey — an important practitioner and teacher in the Arts and Crafts movement — which is reflected in this piece.

She returned to Sydney at the beginning of the Great Depression and initially taught pottery at the YWCA, before opening her own commercial pottery business in conjunction with her younger brother Robert.

Nell is recognized as having made simple, yet spectacular pieces that earned her the Art and Craft Society’s 'Elizabeth Soderberg Memorial Award for Pottery', in 1947 and 1951.

Increasingly hard to find, McCredie pottery is very collectible.
