ABOUT ELLIS CERAMICS
Ellis was a highly-respected pottery firm that operated in Melbourne in the middle of the last century. It was set up in 1953 by a Czechoslovakian couple, Dagmar and Milda Kratochvil, who had fled their homeland in 1951 as political refugees. Their business commenced in a tiny workshop in their backyard.
By the mid-1960s they had moved to larger premises and employed more than 15 people, selling to department stores and exporting products to Japan. As well as making functional ware and lamp bases, Ellis produced a series of human and animal figures, masks, and plaques. The firm operated until the late 1970s and their work is now highly collectible.
