Sumptuous & Stunning! Early 1900s Art Nouveau Coffee Set for 4 | FSC — Friedrich Simon Studio, Carlsbad
This exceptional, museum-worthy, art nouveau Czech demitasse coffee set comprises four fine porcelain gold-lined cups matched with heavily gilded saucers, a coffee pot, a milk jug, a lidded sugar bowl, and a matching tray. The extremely ornate and sumptuous decoration features a stylized orange butterfly and blue leaf design on a brown ground with rich gold embellishments. The back stamp consists of a flag mark with "FSC. Czechoslovakian Quality Porcelain". On some pieces, you can see that this is stamped over another mark — that of the original manufacturer of the blank pieces of porcelain, which were then decorated by the Friedrich Simon studio in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad).
This exceptional set is a magnificent example of ceramics as an art form that also presents an insight into Czech and Bohemian cultural identity. Although this coffee set is completely functional — no chips, cracks, crazing, or repairs — it deserves center stage in your collectibles cabinet; it is something to be looked at and admired, rather than used. If you appreciate the aesthetics of high-quality ceramics, this is a set for you.
This art nouveau coffee set set includes:
• 4 Demitasse coffee cups: 4 cm (~1.6") high, 7 cm (~2.75") across the opening
• 4 Saucers: 11.5 cm (~4.5")• 1 Creamer/milk jug 9 cm (~3.5") high, 8.5 cm (~3.35") across the opening (including spout)
• 1 Lidded sugar bowl: 9.5 cm (~3.7") high, including lid; 10 cm (~3.9") at widest point
• 1 Fine porcelain tray: 48.5 (~19.1) x 27.5 cm (~10.8 in.)
The condition throughout is excellent considering the age, with no cracks, chips, crazing, or repairs. There are some signs of age-related (and appropriate) wear to the gilding. One coffee cup has small black dots on the interior; another has a white spot. There are small marks here and there, but again, these are appropriate to age — in fact far less than you,d expect from pieces that are almost 120 years old.
We have included a comprehensive set of photographs in high resolution for your examination and are happy to provide whatever other details you may require. It,s rare to find such an exceptional set in such excellent condition.
