Set of Two "Ultima Thule" Highball/Beer Glasses Designed by TAPPIO WIRKKALA for IITTALA | 370ml (~12.5 oz) Capacity | Rare Mid-Century Find
On offer is a set of two "highball" or "beer" glasses designed by Tapio Wirkkala for iittala, Finland, in 1968 as part of the Ultima Thule collection, which for some time was used in Finnair's first-class cabin service.
Each glass is approximately 14.2 cm (~5.6") tall and 7.2 cm (~2.8") wide at the mouth with a 370 ml (~12.5 oz) capacity. None of the glasses have their original stickers or are otherwise marked.
Tapio Wirrkala (1915-1985) is considered one of the icons of Finnish design and a symbol of the international success of postwar Finnish design.
Each glass rests on three round feet and the design is inspired by the effect of melting ice. The term "Ultima Thule" was used in medieval times to refer to places beyond the known world, or sometimes, to Scandinavia. Evocative of an icy landscape of the furthest reaches, Ultima Thule is the most popular line of glassware ever produced by iittala.
At the time of listing, two sets of two glasses are available.
